Choosing Your First Yarn
A plain-language guide to fiber, weight and hook size, so you can pick the right yarn for your first crochet project with confidence.

Start with the fiber
For a first project, cotton is forgiving: it doesn't split easily, shows your stitches clearly and washes well. Wool is warmer and stretchier, which is lovely for hats and blankets but a little less crisp for beginners. Acrylic is inexpensive and hard-wearing — a good choice while you practise.
Understand yarn weight
"Weight" is how thick the yarn is, not how heavy the ball is. A light DK yarn suits bags and tops; a chunky yarn works up fast for blankets and baskets. Each of our yarns lists its weight and a recommended hook range so you can match the two without guesswork.
Match the hook in millimetres
Hooks are measured in millimetres — a smaller number makes a tighter, finer stitch. If a yarn recommends 3.5–4.5 mm, start in the middle at 4 mm and adjust to taste. When in doubt, message us on WhatsApp and we'll help you pick.
