Caring for Your Crochet
How to wash, dry and store handmade crochet so bags, hats and toys keep their shape and softness for years.

Wash gently, by hand
Handmade crochet likes cool water and a gentle detergent. Wash by hand, swishing rather than scrubbing, and never wring the piece — twisting stretches the stitches out of shape. Press the water out between your palms or in a towel instead.
Dry flat and reshape
Lay the piece flat on a towel, away from direct sun and radiators, and gently pat it back into shape while damp. This is especially important for hats and bags, which can droop if hung to dry. Wool in particular should always dry flat to avoid felting.
Store folded, not hung
Fold crochet pieces to store them; hanging lets gravity slowly pull the stitches long. A shelf or drawer is perfect. With a little care, a handmade piece will outlast almost anything else in your wardrobe.
